ESCWA Web Governance

These are the standards and guidelines for managing and maintaining the ESCWA website. All content entered after 1 May 2016 should follow the guidelines set here and page revisions for existing pages should be made in accordance with the timelines provide

Standards for Writing Webpage Titles

These are webpage titles (at least they are in the ESCWA website)

  • 60 character maximum (longer titles are cutoff)
  • Focus on keywords in the beginning while still making it readable
  • Capitalize all words except articles, conjunctions and prepositions[2]. Do not use all caps.
  • Omit stop words at the beginning of titles (see section below for list of stop words)
  • Only use abbreviations when the abbreviation is so common that omitting it may reduce recognition

Follow further guidelines and spacing and punctuation patterns provided below for specific types of webpages.

re/main title: the one used to identify the work, to place it in context, to convey a minimal summary of its contents, and to pique the reader's curiosity.
Subtitle:  an explanatory or alternate title.

Why are titles important?

Webpage titles are one of the first things you notice on the page.

Titles entered on the webpage appear in the first line of search results (see screenshot below). Words in the title are bolded if they appear in the search query. This can help users recognize if the page is likely to be relevant to their search.[1]

Titles help people decide what to click on to read.

By default, webpage titles appear on Facebook posts when a link is inserted into the post.

  • ESCWA website: ESCWA's public website https://www.unescwa.org
  • Subsites: Set of interconnected web page not necessarily developed by ESCWA, e.g. a publication site, a special event site, a project site.... A list of sub-sites and visual captures can be found in the List of ESCWA Subsites section (all existing sub sites are being migrated to the new templates with the same brand and design)
  • Content Management System: A system that facilitates the use of reusable components or customized software for managing Web content.
  • Drupal: A free and open-source content-management framework written in PHP
  • Core title: The title used to identify the work and summarize the contents. (In come ESCWA titles, the core title is before the : and sometimes it is after the :.  The core title should pique the reader's curiosity.
  • Subtitle:  An explanatory or alternate title.
