These are the standards and guidelines for managing and maintaining the ESCWA website. All content entered after 1 May 2016 should follow the guidelines set here and page revisions for existing pages should be made in accordance with the timelines provide

Standards for Keywords

Keywords must be selected from the United Nations Bibliographical Information System. You may select multiple keywords.

  • A term or phrase used in a subject heading/thesaurus list to represent a concept, event, or name.
  • Conceptual analysis of an item: what is it about?
  • Translation of the analysis into a particular subject heading/thesaurus system. (UN Thesaurus)
  • Allow users to retrieve all material dealing with the same subject(s), regardless of format.
  • Controlled: identify a preferred way of expressing a concept

Types of concepts to identify:

  • Topics
  • Names of:
    • Persons
    • Corporate bodies
    • Geographic areas
  • Time periods
  • Titles of works
  • Form of the item

Why are keywords important?

Keywords appear at the bottom of publication webpages and hyperlink to other publications with the same keyword. Keywords are also searchable.
